The brief
The client and their garden designer asked for the patio and the surrounding masonry to be restored sympathetically — keeping the character of what was already there, and finishing so it looked as though we had never been.
What we did
- Kept the existing stone rather than starting again with new
- Lifted and reset what had failed, leaving the sound work alone
- Carried out masonry repairs to the surrounding stonework
- Matched the mortar and the finish to the existing work

A patio and stonework that read as original and untouched — restored, not replaced, and quietly better than before.

Why use lime mortar instead of cement?
Older and traditionally-built stone needs to breathe. Cement traps moisture against the stone, which leads to damp and accelerated decay. Breathable lime mortar lets moisture move out of the wall and stays softer than the stone, so it’s the mortar that weathers rather than the masonry. We match the mix to the building.
